Undoubtedly, the largest private land-based mainly Greenfields mining project in the world, the Roy Hill Project in Western Australia, has achieved remarkable success delivering the $10.5 billion project within budget and timeframes.
This success has been recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI) Australian Chapters through the awarding of the PMI Australian Project of the Year.
Accepting the Award was Mrs Gina Rinehart, Chairman of Hancock Prospecting and Roy Hill Holdings, and Mr Sanjiv Manchanda, Roy Hill Project Director (left), at the PMI Australian
Conference 2016 Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony on 30 May, in Adelaide.
“On behalf of the Project Management Institute’s Australian Chapters, we congratulate Chairman Mrs Gina Rinehart, CEO Mr Barry Fitzgerald and Project Director Mr Sanjiv Manchanda and Roy Hill Holdings on winning the Project of the Year award.
“It is a credit to the project management team and the rigorous application of the project management principles that has helped the Roy Hill Project become a success. “Projects of this scale, reinforce the commitment from the industry to adapt project management principles and practices to deliver world class projects that are commercially viable and financially successful,” said Mr Peter Pavan, President Project Management Institute, Adelaide, South Australia.
The Roy Hill Project encompasses an expansive and complex development comprising of the engineering, procurement, and construction of an iron ore processing plant, 344km railway line, two-berth port, enabling infrastructure, and a state-of-the art remote operations centre in Perth. Situated in the remote and arid Pilbara region, the Project area including the mine located 115km north of Newman the port west of Port Hedland is subject to tropical and cyclonic conditions.
Departure of the first ore shipment was made in December 2015 with a final hand-over from the construction contractor of the mine, port and rail in February 2016. By the end of 2016, it’s expected that operations will be at full capacity making Roy Hill, the fourth largest iron ore producer, and exporter in Australia, shipping 55 million tonnes per annum with an expected mine life of 25 years.
Delivering a project of this magnitude and complexity is a remarkable feat. Roy Hill’s Project Management Team led by Roy Hill CEO Barry Fitzgerald and Project Director Sanjiv Manchanda, adopted innovative project management methods and processes to achieve a successful outcome.
Mr Fitzgerald and Mr Manchanda noted critical factors in the Roy Hill Project which contributed to its successful outcomes including:
• having the right skills sets on the Project at the appropriate times
• clear requirements for contractors
• exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement
• a deeply commercial culture throughout the Project team;
• a risk-based approach, reviewing risks and reassigning resource; and
• issues escalation process to reduce roadblock and stagnation when resolving issues resulting in no excessive loss of additional time.
The end result was a seamless working relationship with all stakeholders which delivered a world class project.
