The small mining town of Paraburdoo hosted the annual Hancock Prospecting Pilbara Championships for the first time in 23 years last month, bringing together 176 participants from 12 different clubs.
Exmouth Amateur Swimming Club stood out in the fierce contest, claiming the outright prize on 663, determined by the 1211 individual swim and 54 relay team results.
It was an impressive outing for the Broome Barracudas, the only Kimberley squad that made the trek, who finished in second place, followed by Karratha in third.
Youngster Conor Langlands, from Karratha, had an impressive showing over the weekend, recording quick times of 2:19:33 and 1:02:50 in the 200m and 100m freestyle events, respectively.
The swimmers, who aged from eight to 46, were paid a special visit by Paralympian Joshua Hofer, who has 11 medals to his name.
Now involved with the Perth City Swimming Club, Hofer took part in events at the meet and spoke with each club and gave children the opportunity to take pictures wearing his many medals.
Paraburdoo Amateur Swimming Club event co-ordinator Phyllis Davis said the competition was a tremendous success.
“We’ve received great feedback from the officials and visiting clubs,” she said.
“There were many personal bests achieved, along with many Pilbara records broken.
“It was pleasing to see great participation in all events, particularly in the mixed medley relays and freestyle relays. displaying sportsmanship and camaraderie connecting regional WA.”
The championships are held in a different Pilbara town each year.
The 2020 variation will be held in Port Hedland.
Ms Davis thanked all officials and volunteers for their contributions.
