Cam McEvoy Bound For Rio Olympics With Freestyle ‘Triple Crown’
Bond University Swimming Club continued to make a splash at the 2016 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships this week, with four gold medals and two Bond swimmers making the
Australian Olympic swim team. Australia’s new ‘golden boy’, Bond Swimming Club’s Cam McEvoy, secured his spot for Rio and made history when he became the first Australian swimmer ever to win the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle national titles at the one championships.
Cam was in blistering form the entire meet, earning three individual swims at Rio and two relays, making him Australia’s busiest male swimmer.
Other standout performances from the Bond University Swimming Club who reached the semi-finals and/or finals at the national championships included Matthew Davis, Brayden McCarthy, Elijah Winnington, Ella Bond, Jenna Strauch, Amy Forrester and Will Harmsen.
Bond student Maddie Groves, who swims at St Peters Western, won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m butterfly events to secure her position in the Australian Olympic swim team, joining Cam at the Rio Olympics in September.
Maddie was crowned Sportsperson of the Year at the 2015 Bond University Blues Awards. She is studying a Bachelor of Social Sciences at Bond University after being awarded the 2015 Georgina Hope Rinehart Swimming Excellence Scholarship, an exclusive sporting scholarship that provides opportunities and support to young swimmers to complete their studies while competing.
Earlier this week in Adelaide at the 2016 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Championships, 15 year-old Bond swimmer Elijah Winnington won seven gold medals in the seven events he swam in – the men’s 15 years’ 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle; 100m and 200m butterfly; and 200m and 400m individual medley – achieving a personal best time for each and every race.
