It was smiles and ecstatic tears all around for the Aussies on Day 4 with nine golds, seven silvers and three bronze medals to add to their tally.
Another medal haul in the pool has netted the Dolphins five more golds. Kyle Chalmers charged home to win the 100m freestyle, while Kaylee McKeown claimed the backstroke double when she won the 200m to add to her 100m crown in a new Games record of 2:06.60. She then backed up less an hour later to snare a silver in the 200m individual medley.
Emma McKeon won her fifth Birmingham gold in the 50m butterfly, taking her overall Commonwealth Games gold medal tally to 12. She shared the podium with Holly Barrett who tied for silver, with Alex Perkins finishing fifth. It was also a golden finish to Para-swimmer Matthew Levy’s career, defending his crown in the 50m freestyle S7, with Joel Mundie finishing sixth.
Mack Horton, Zac Incerti, Elijah Winnington and Flynn Southam capped off the night with a win and a Games record in the 4 x 200m freestyle.
In the 50m backstroke, Bradley Woodward (fourth) and Ben Armbruster (seventh) missed out on medals, while in the 100m breaststroke SB6, Isabella Vincent and Ella Jones finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Looking ahead, Emma McKeon, Mollie O’Callaghan and Shayna Jack are the fastest three qualifiers for the 100m freestyle. Matt Temple powered home to qualify fastest in the 100m butterfly, with teammate Cody Simpson making his first Commonwealth Games final as the fifth fastest qualifier.
Matt Williamson was the fastest qualifier in the 50m breaststroke and Grayson Bell is also through to the final.
Beach volleyballers Chris McHugh and Paul Burnett have claimed another straight-set victory in their pool match against South Africa.
