THREE rookies have been selected in the Australian Dolphins team to compete at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar from February 2-18.
The team features 50m freestyle world champion Cam McEvoy, the in-form Shayna Jack who recently blitzed the women’s 50m free final clocking 24.09 to win gold at the Queensland State Championships, confirmed Paris athlete Chelsea Gubecka and three debutants in the green and gold cap: Iona Anderson, Jaclyn Barclay and Robert Thorpe.
For Anderson and Barclay, pictured, their selection follows an outstanding 2023 campaign in which the backstroke specialists shone on the international stage at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Israel.
In all, 24 athletes will contest the Championships with Maddy Gough and Moesha Johnson contesting the women’s open water 10km event before backing up to swim in the pool 1500m event.
For Gubecka, who has already qualified for the 10km event in Paris, this will be her seventh World Championships, the most of any Dolphin.
Newly-minted Dolphin Kai Taylor is also packing his bags for his second Worlds’ campaign alongside St Peters Western teammates Jack Cartwright, Jenna Forrester, Abbey Harkin, Kiah Melverton, Brianna Throssell and the experienced Elijah Winnington.
