Roy Hill is pleased to announce that its $10.5 billion mega-iron ore project in Australia’s Pilbara region is the proud recipient of the Engineers Australia WA Engineering Distinction Award and 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Award for Project Management.
The 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) WA program seeks to identify, recognise and reward outstanding achievement in the practice of engineering and is the premier event for the engineering profession in WA.
The Project Management Award recognises excellence in managing a project or an engineering work that achieves client requirements in harmony with environment, business and community considerations, while meeting time, cost and quality targets.
These prestigious awards were presented to Mr Sanjiv Manchanda, Project Director and Acting Chief Operating Officer, at the gala awards ceremony on 17 September in Perth, West Australia.
On receiving the awards, Mr Manchanda said, “By any measure, the scale and complexity of the development of the mega-Roy Hill project was extraordinary and the project management effort involved in successfully bringing it to fruition on time and budget was remarkable.”
“The project team had to address a number complexities during construction, including managing a contractor workforce of more than 25,000 over the life of construction and safely delivering a wide range of infrastructure over a broad geographic area, while still meeting the stringent project objectives and timeline.
This was all achieved with no lost time due to industrial relations stoppages and no lost time injuries in over
37.9 million hours worked. A truly noteworthy achievement.”
“In order to ensure that the stringent project objectives and timeline were met, Roy Hill established an innovative and unique project management structure that had never been attempted in the construction of iron ore projects in Australia previously, by engaging a Project Management Contractor to oversee the fixedprice Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract and bring people, systems and processes to the Project.”
“The way in which the Project was structured and managed has set a new benchmark for project management excellence in Australia and indeed the project management of large scale mining projects in Australia, which is already being emulated by projects currently in development across the country.”
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Roy Hill Holdings, Chief Executive Officer, Barry Fitzgerald, acknowledged the vital role Mrs Gina Rinehart, Chairman of Hancock Prospecting and Roy Hill Holdings, played in the development of the Roy Hill Project.
“Without the vision and leadership of Mrs Rinehart, who pegged the leases after becoming chair, back in
1992, leases not thought of value by others, we would not be talking about the Roy Hill Project.”
“Many years of risk, persistence, investment and hard work in doing the successful exploration, studies, planning and preparation including obtaining many, many government approvals is a testimony to the perseverance and efforts of Mrs Rinehart and her small executive team at Hancock Prospecting.”
Mr Fitzgerald also acknowledged the hard work and commitment of the many thousands of people who helped deliver the Roy Hill Project.
“In accepting these awards, Roy Hill would also like to thank and recognise the many men and women who came together, whether it was in a design and planning role or out working in the harsh Pilbara environment in a construction role, for helping to take the Roy Hill Project from a vision to reality.”

Roy Hill is pleased to announce that its $10.5 billion mega-iron ore project in Australia’s Pilbara region is the proud recipient of the Engineers Australia WA Engineering Distinction Award and 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Award for Resource Development.
The 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) WA program seeks to identify, recognise and reward outstanding achievement in the practice of engineering and is the premier event for the engineering profession in WA.
The Resource Development Award recognises excellence in any resource development for commercial, industrial or other purposes that has substantial engineering content.
These prestigious awards were presented to Mr Sanjiv Manchanda, Project Director and Acting Chief Operating Officer, at the gala awards ceremony on 17 September in Perth, West Australia.
On receiving the awards, Mr Manchanda said, “By any measure, the scale and complexity of the Roy Hill Project is extraordinary. No resource development project of this type could have been delivered so successfully without a carefully planned and coordinated engineering effort beginning at the Early Contractor Involvement phase, continuing right through to commissioning and into operations.”
“The Roy Hill Project was delivered within the budget and timeline set in the Bankable Feasibility Study and approved variations for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) package amounting to less than 1% of the contract value and the ramp-up to full production is progressing well.”
“At Roy Hill, the focus is not simply the amount of iron ore than can be excavated from the ground, but rather the sustained, low cost production of iron ore which is consistent in quality and grade. This approach helps maintain competitiveness when other higher cost resource developments may be more susceptible to commodity market fluctuations. As a result of this approach, Roy Hill had to not only achieve a new Australian benchmark in engineering, it had to set that new benchmark or risk the resource never being developed.”

“Roy Hill will create approximately 2,000 direct jobs, generate approximately $3 billion in export revenue per annum at today’s iron ore price and is predicted to generate $17 billion in taxes and royalties over the life of the mine. Combined project and operations expenditure awarded to Australian suppliers exceeded $7 billion. Roy Hill has already made a substantial contribution to the Australian economy and is set to continue contributing to the Australian economy for many years to come.”
